Born 16 Apr 1832, Fairfax County, Virginia. Died of Scarlett Fever 22 Mar 1874, Altoona, Blair, Pennsylvania. Married Mary Susanna Howard Dotzler 03 Aug 1854 at Susan’s house on G Street, Washington, DC. by Charles A. Davis, of the Methodist Church. It was his first marriage and her second. Susan died 15 Oct 1912 Altoona, Blair, Pennsylvania and is buried at Rosehill Cemetery.

James’ father is reputed to be John Mattingly, Jr. and his mother, Nancy Jane Lane. If this is true as assumed, his brother was Samuel Davis Mattingly, b. 1833 and his sister, Isabella Mattingly, b. 1835.
James was a tinner by trade. He volunteered in the Civil War for a three-month period; April – July 1861. He moved his family to Altoona, Pennsylvania and was a foreman of the P.R.R. Company’s tin shop before he died. His obit said he died of consumption after a lingering illness.
