Andrew Jackson Gabler enlisted in Lanesborough, Massachusetts, at age 19 on 1 January 1864. He was a private in Company B of the Massachusetts 1st Cavalry Regiment. On 26 June 1865, Andrew was mustered out at Washington, DC. Andrew was born 4 September 1846 in Sand Lake, New York. His Grandfather Gottlieb Gabler moved to America from Germany. Andrew followed his father, Thomas, as a glassblower for 40 years.
He married Mary Jane Burgess in New York in 1867, and shortly after they moved to Ottawa, Illinois. They had two daughters before Mary died at age 28. Andrew remarried Jessie Lind and had five more children. Andrew and Jessie moved to West Virginia within five years of marriage and stayed there the remainder of their lives. Andrew died in 1934 at age 88.
