Pvt., 21st Iowa Infantry

Lewis Clark Wolfe, at age 32, enrolled in Company G of the 21st Regiment of the Iowa Volunteers commanded by William A. Benton on the 15th of August 1862. Shortly after, about November of 1862, he contracted measles. He was transferred to Post Hospital at Rolla Mo and again at Memphis, Tennessee. He was transferred in September of 1864 to 24 Co. VRC. He was honorably discharged at Washington D. C. 28 June 1865.
At age 27, Lewis C. Wolfe married to Rebecca J. Walker Gott 3 Feb 1857 in Clayton Co., Iowa. They had two children when he left to enroll in the Civil War.
After he returned from the war, Lewis C. Wolfe with one son, traveled from eastern Iowa where they lived at that time, to Nebraska, early in 1871, settling in Yellowbanks in what used to be called “Dry Hollow.” Mrs. Wolfe and the children left their home which was 15 miles from Dyersville, Iowa and went by train to Sioux City, Iowa where Mr. Wolfe met them and brought them to Nebraska. Lewis C. Wolfe filed a homestead entry for Range 3 W, section 11, in township 24 N of range No 3 W at Dakota City now Norfolk, Nebraska, saying he had resided there since 5 July 1872. Marsee J. Besst and C. F. Solder did solemnly swear that they had known him 3 years past as the head of a family consisting of a wife and 6 children. Lewis C. Wolfe and his wife Rebecca, later moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa where he resided for many years before he died September 14, 1917 at age 88.
